Do I need a residence permit to live in Spain?
As in every country in the world, you need a residence permit to live in Spain. Called the NIE (Numéro d'Identification des Étrangers), it is essential for any non-Spanish expatriate living in Spain. The NIE is required to exchange or register a driver's license, open a bank account, pay bills or complete the formalities for buying property in Spain. It is compulsory for non-residents with interests in Spain.
For stays of more than three months, non-residents must apply for a residence permit. Applications are made to the Foreigners' Secretariat or the nearest police station. Forms, proof of income and other documents are required. This card is reserved for non-Spaniards wishing to live and work in Spain.
Future long-term residents of Spain will want to set up their main residence in a property of their own. Without an NIE or residence permit, it is impossible to complete the formalities for buying property in Spain. Think about it as soon as you arrive!
