Catalonia is a unique region for its cultural richness. Geographically very close to France, it enjoys nevertheless different habits and customs. N1immo explains you how to better understand this region.
Catalan traditions
Catalans in general are very fond of festivals and various celebrations. The best known of these is certainly the Sanch procession. This religious festival, which takes place on Fridays, retraces the Passion of Christ. Catalonia is proud of its traditions. One of the most important is that of building human towers. Practitioners are commonly known as "castellers". They manage to reach heights of several meters while keeping their balance.
Manners and customs
A very important ritual in Catalonia is the walk. Around 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., before dinner, Catalans usually go for a walk in the city, by the sea or near the mountains. These walks are usually done with friends or family. In short, it is a very convivial and important moment for the local population.
Cars are a subject that often provokes debate. Traffic rules and signs are much less respected in Catalonia than in France, and drivers often park inappropriately (or second or third in line). So be careful! Finally, tipping is much more common than in France, and waiters often expect a gesture from you even though the service is included in the bill.
