Whether it's Christmas or New Year's Eve, it's important to know how to break the codes. At least once in your life, you should spend this time of year on the Costa Brava to immerse yourself in Catalan traditions.
Christmas shows and nativity scenes on the Costa Brava
Until Christmas Eve, for example, you can visit the many Christmas markets, which take place in several different towns. You can attend shows like the Platja d'Aro, a light show in Castell d'Aro and Tossa de Mar, a Nativity play in Capelle de l'Antic in Empordà or even the one in Pals Belén or Pressebre.
In addition to the Christmas decorations and illuminations, the charming little Catalan villages all put up their nativity scenes during the festive season. The one in Castell d'Aro is one of the most beautiful and well-known, as is the one in Tossa de Mar.
Chocolate lovers have good reason to rejoice as Christmas approaches on the Costa Brava. It's traditional to gather around chocolate in all its forms during the month of December.
Christmas in Girona
One of the Catalan traditions to discover when you decide to set up home on the Costa Brava, whether for Christmas or for the rest of the year, is the famous Girona quine lottery. Several other villages in the Girona area also organize this Christmas lottery, which attracts large numbers of Catalans. These events are organized in aid of charities, and are an opportunity to spend some merry moments with friends and family.
The city of Girona also organizes an annual Christmas concert. It is given by the Friends of the Art Museum on December 20 at 7pm and always attracts the same crowds. Also in Girona, a Christmas park dedicated entirely to children is set up for the festive season.
What to do on December 31 on the Costa Brava
In addition to nativity celebrations, special activities are also organized on the evening of December 31. You can enjoy traditional festivals, not forgetting to eat the 12 grapes symbolizing the 12 bells rung at midnight.
You can also head to the beach to admire the first rays of sunshine on the first morning of the New Year. Here, every year, huge crowds eat chocolate-covered churros in anticipation of the New Year. Restaurants offer special New Year's Eve menus, as do bars, cafés and pubs. In the nightclubs, wild parties are organized. And if you're a dancing enthusiast, the Latin dance nights are just waiting for you!
