Are you planning to make the Costa Brava your home? Once you've had a taste of it, it's hard not to be charmed by the Costa Brava's many attractions. Dali, who was born and died not far from here in Figueres, would certainly not have argued the contrary, having drawn so much creative inspiration from the beauty of this superb region.
Figueres, the birthplace of Dali
To visit or settle on the Costa Brava without following in the footsteps of the Catalan artist is almost a mission impossible. The Dalinian triangle is a must-see in the Costa Brava. The artist loved the typical Mediterranean landscapes of the Costa Brava, its pine forests, fishing villages, coves and cliffs. So leave from Figueres, a city in the northeast of Catalonia, where you can visit the Dali Theater-Museum. The artist rehabilitated this former municipal theater destroyed during the Spanish war and it is there that he rests today, under the dome located in the center of the museum.
Portlligat, Dali's beloved little port on the Costa Brava
After this visit, go to discover Portlligat. This small village near Cardaques, in the very east of Spain, is home to Salvador Dali's house-museum. As early as 1930, the Catalan genius of the 20th century spent many years in this small picturesque fishing port that he loved. He regularly settled in a small fisherman's house that he constantly modified and enlarged over the years, and worked there until the death of his wife Gala, in 1984. Salvador Dali was amazed and inspired by the landscape and the lights of Portlligat.
His house, which over the years has become a veritable labyrinth, offers several outdoor spaces that allowed him to fully enjoy this exceptional environment. The artist contributed greatly to the preservation of this charming village, refusing to see constructions come and spoil its view. On many of his works, Dali painted the landscape that he could admire from his house. The bay of Portlligat also strongly inspired him and its rocks appear on many paintings. Dali's house can be visited all year round, but it is highly recommended to reserve your place several days in advance to be sure to enter.
The castle of Gala Dali
In Pubol, in the municipality of La Pera, further south and a few kilometers inland from the sea, you will discover the Gala Dali castle. The artist acquired this medieval building dating from the eleventh century as a gift to his wife and muse Gala. When she died, she was buried in the crypt of the castle.
