Holidaymakers are the economic focus of the summer. Is this why the situation in northern Spain appears somewhat distorted in some of the French media? We feel it's important to remain factual, and to remind those who wish to visit us that holidaymakers in Rosas and Empuriabrava are enjoying their vacations to the full.
Everything's going well here, and we're making sure it stays that way all summer long!
Of course, Spain, like France, has seen an increase in the number of cases since the opening of its borders. In Catalonia, the cities of Barcelona and Figueres are preparing for recontainment precisely as a precautionary measure. Barcelona is the city most affected by COVID-19 in Catalonia. The seaside, ROSES, EMPURIABRAVA... are by no means confined.
French Prime Minister Jean Castex announced on July 18 that the France/Spain border might once again be closed. It's true that Spain delayed opening its borders with France to avoid a resumption of the epidemic, already as a precautionary measure.
As a reminder, France opened its borders with Spain on June 15, 2020, while Spain did not reopen its borders with France until June 21, 2020. And now it's France that has spoken to the media (Jean Castex) about the possibility of closing the France/Spain border and urging French nationals to return home. Probably a political way of passing the buck to Spain...
IMPORTANT : The media should not forget to mention that French people in Spain or Catalonia can of course enjoy their vacations without any worries. Northern Catalonia remains an ideal vacation destination, even though it's only about 50 km from France. Sanitary measures are much more systematically respected in Spain than in some of our French regions. Holidaymakers can take advantage of their stay to stroll wherever they like, go out to eat, and enjoy the most beautiful beaches of the northern Costa Brava without any problems. All they have to do is follow the rules like everyone else. The ROSES, SANTA MARGARITA, EMPURIABRAVA, PALAU SAVERDERA, LLANCA and L'ESCALA areas are in no way restricted.
It's also worth pointing out that if France were to decide to close its borders in the worst-case scenario, French nationals could continue to enjoy their vacations in France before returning home in their vehicles. The borders would then be filtered, not closed. As a reminder, when the borders were closed in the spring, those nationals who wished to do so were able to return home, while others decided to stay in Spain on the Costa Brava. Only those who wanted to come after the closure were asked to turn back. Your French identity document allows you to return home whenever you wish, in any case.
