Choosing a French school in Spain
In French schools, the official French curriculum is taught. However, it is possible to apply for scholarships based on family resources. Although integration into Spanish society is much slower, it often offers very good results in terms of success. It's important to apply early if you want to secure a place: many private schools have waiting lists. For further information, please contact your local French Consulate General.
Fees for French schools in Spain
Enrolment costs are particularly high: in Spain, the average cost of a school year is between 3,000 and 6,000 euros (depending on the level of study).
Schooling in Spain: the local public school
Unlike French schools, public school enrolment is totally free. However, if your child is not yet Spanish-speaking, adaptation can be a little tricky. There is no special adaptation program for foreign students, but rather total integration into the local culture and society.
Some private schools have excellent reputations, such as the Centre Scolaire Empordà in the town of Rosas. Don't hesitate to trust word-of-mouth when choosing a school for your little ones.
Choosing a bilingual public school
In bilingual public schools, the curriculum is the same as the Spanish curriculum. Almost half of the classes are taught in French, which allows for a smooth integration for your children. Your children will benefit from a new culture while continuing to study in their native language. Some schools are free of charge, while others charge a fee ranging from 100 to 200 euros per month.
Distance learning
Distance learning courses allow you to learn Spanish and maintain your French academic level while abroad. Many courses are designed to study at a distance while following the official programs. For example, the CNED is one of the many reference centers for correspondence courses, from kindergarten to higher education. You can expect to pay between 150 and 800 euros per year for distance learning.
